Brazil is at risk of having WhatsApp suspended by the justice system.

Judge Luiz Antônio Afonso Júnior from the Comarca de Catalão, in Goiás state, discussed the option of temporarily halting WhatsApp nationwide due to Meta’s failure to comply with a court order. The ruling, issued on Monday (10), demands that WhatsApp Business restore a user’s access.

WhatsApp may face a suspension in Brazil.

The judge noted that not following the ruling has harmed the person who filed the lawsuit as they are unable to utilize their primary means of communication and work.

The judge also set a daily penalty of R $ 3,000 for failure to comply with the court order, with a maximum total of R $ 50,000.

Luiz also cautioned that further violations could lead to additional actions such as blocking Meta bank accounts or temporarily halting WhatsApp operations within the country.

The process is ongoing and waiting for Meta’s decision to be implemented. All messenger functions were operating normally as of the time of this publication.

WhatsApp lock is not available today.

The potential WhatsApp ban in Brazil is not a new occurrence. In 2015, the app stopped functioning, and in April 2024, the Supreme Court (STF) deliberated on the option of halting the service once more, but the decision did not progress.

X, previously known as Twitter, faced a setback when it was blocked in August 2024 and only resumed operations over a year later following compliance with the Supreme Court’s rulings.
