Census data from 2022 highlights significant issues in the education system in Brazil. The expansion of higher education has been limited, with less than 20% of the population having completed it. Additionally, 35% of the population has not finished primary education. The analysis of the data shows that educational progress is uneven and inadequate. Despite some growth in higher education, many people still face challenges in completing their basic education. Immediate action is needed.

Improvements in the field of education in Brazil have been ongoing for a long time.

The numbers show a slow and uneven progress, indicating that there is no cause for celebration as many indicators remain significantly below the desired average. Despite an increase in higher education over the past 22 years, only 18% of Brazilians have completed a college degree. In the 18 to 24 age group, there is a concerning percentage of young people who are neither studying nor working, known as “nem-nem”. While the OECD countries have an average of 15% of young people in this situation, in Brazil this number is as high as 25%, which is troubling. Women in Brazil are particularly affected by this situation, experiencing high levels of unemployment and exclusion from education. The rate of “nem-nem” among women in this age group is even higher, at 30%. This data underscores the pressing need for policies and initiatives to enhance educational and career prospects for young Brazilians, particularly women.

OECD data shows that Brazil ranks third lowest out of 42 countries in education investment, with only $3,000 being invested per public education student compared to the average of over $10,000 in other countries.

Persistent regional disparities exist in both primary and higher education.

Access to education in Brazil is unevenly distributed across the country, leading to educational disparities among Brazilian states. The Northeast region has a higher percentage of individuals with incomplete primary education compared to the Southeast. Piauí has the highest proportion of people without any education or with incomplete primary education, while the Federal District shows the lowest percentage. Additionally, over half of the municipalities in Brazil have a majority of the population aged 25 or older who have not completed primary education.

It is time to take action!

The Census 2022 data shows that progress has been made, but it is not a reason to celebrate. The improvements in the past decade are significant but have been slow and fall short of Brazil’s needs. Education in Brazil continues to encounter major challenges and inequalities that require immediate attention. Making education a top priority is crucial, and effective public policies must be put in place to reduce disparities and secure a brighter future for all Brazilians.

PL 4142/2023: CHILD SCIENTIFIC INITIATION

The project creates the Student Scientific Initiation Grant for outstanding basic education students from Bolsa Família beneficiary families who excel in national academic and scientific competitions. It offers a special opportunity for all participants.

The project belongs to me and is being reviewed by the Committee on Economic Affairs (CAE).

PL 2849/2023: _

The proposal includes support for post-doctoral students, teaching and research institutions, and additional measures to ensure future security.

The project is my own and is under consideration by the Committee on Economic Affairs (CAE).

PL 3650/2023: CONNECTION CELEBRATION

Establishing the National Month of Scientific and Knowledge Olympics to be observed yearly in July is a means of appreciating the future geniuses.

The project is mine, it was approved by the Senate, and now it has been forwarded to the Chamber of Deputies.

PL 1058/2020: Education Resources with Flexibility

Flexible utilization of resources for school meals during the suspension of classes in public elementary schools due to emergencies or public disasters reflects adaptable and resilient education.

I serve as the rapporteur for the project within the Education Committee (EC).

Increased funding for higher education: PL 3817/2019

Laws are being modified to boost financial support for higher education in the nation, which represents an investment in the academic prospects ahead.
