Apple agreed to pay $95 million to settle a class action lawsuit concerning Siri’s privacy issues, which alleged that the company recorded and shared users’ private conversations without permission.
The plan also needs to be authorized by a judge, and the amount paid to recipients may change based on the number of people making claims.
The agreement applies to individuals who have activated Siri on their Apple devices between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, during private conversations by mistake.
Payments can go up to $20 per device, with a limit of five devices per individual. The amounts may be changed depending on the number of claimants eligible for the payment.
The group effort was initiated following a 2019 disclosure by The Guardian that Apple contractors had access to private user data.
Medical details, personal talks, and private chats were inadvertently captured due to accidental triggers like background noises.
Demanders allege that Apple devices like iPhones captured conversations even when users did not say the activation word for Siri.
Apple acknowledged that only a small portion of the recordings was shared with contractors. The company issued a formal apology and declared it would no longer store audio recordings of user interactions.
