The São Paulo Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) has acquired a new tool for maintaining urban order. At the Réveillon celebration on Paulista Avenue, the organization introduced a robotic dog named Leí onto the streets.
The technology had been involved in significant events in São Paulo in 2024, such as the U.S. football league game at the Neo Química Arena in September and Formula 1 in November, but all were canceled.
How does it function?
The robot dog, controlled remotely, has cameras equipped with facial recognition technology that sends live footage to a monitoring center, enabling the identification of missing and wanted individuals.
Leí also has an additional camera at the back of the robot, providing a 360-degree panoramic view of the surroundings.
The device serves as a valuable tool for monitoring crowded public areas, especially during peak times such as the New Year period. Additionally, it is regularly used for street patrols in the city center, shopping centers, and high-risk areas, conducting sweeps and analyzing spaces before personnel enter.

The robot dog is constantly with a trio of GCM agents during its missions, who stay within a 300-meter range. Made in China, the robot has a two-hour battery capacity and is produced by the same company supplying cameras for the city’s Smart Sampa facial recognition system.
There are plans to obtain additional units to enhance security at other events in the city, like music festivals and football games.
