Meta, Google, and X did not participate in the AGU debate on social media.

AGU’s technical discussion on Wednesday did not involve Google, X, TikTok, or Meta. The meeting focused on topics such as social media regulation, combating disinformation, and upholding fundamental rights in the digital realm.

The meeting, which assembled professionals, civil society representatives, audit agencies, and public and private institutions, was arranged with the backing of various government entities such as the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship, the Secretariat for Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic, and the Ministry of Finance.

AGU stated that the funds gathered will be presented to the Supreme Court as assistance in cases related to the oversight of digital platforms. The resources will also be shared with the National Congress and the public.

The Union’s Attorney General, Jorge Messiah, emphasized the federal government’s dedication to creating a safe digital space and stressed the significance of engaging in discussions with technology firms during the event.

The federal government aims to ensure the safety of all Brazilians in all environments, whether online or offline. They support open dialogue and collaboration with various platforms and digital networks.

Messiah also highlighted the aim of providing comfort to families, traders, and consumers in their digital interactions.

We will make every effort to ensure that mothers, fathers, traders, consumers, and society as a whole feel more secure and confident in using these platforms.

The Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Macaé Evaristo, emphasized the significance of establishing online spaces that ensure the safety of children and teenagers and confront issues like racism, misogyny, and other forms of discrimination.

Technical meeting

The technical audience was interested in the recent updates made by Meta to its content moderation policy, specifically regarding the management of hate speech.

Measures to reduce the spread of criminal and illicit content on online platforms, enhancing reporting methods, and promoting transparency by companies were among the other subjects discussed.

Jorge Messiah emphasized that the conversation with Meta, Google, X, and TikTok companies is ongoing despite their absence.

Platforms have the opportunity to make submissions until January 24 to engage in the regulatory development process.

The debate results will influence Supreme Court rulings on two cases with significant impact: 1.307.396/SP (Theme 987) and 1.057.258/MG (Theme 533).

They will also be used as the foundation for examining bills in the National Congress regarding social network regulation in Brazil.
