The latest Chinese AI, DeepSeek, quickly became a target for scammers after its release. Over 2,000 fraudulent websites were set up in January alone using the platform’s name for scams, as reported by Branddi. Misleading advertisements are also being used to lure in victims.
Summary of essential information to be aware of
- More than 2,000 fraudulent websites were established under the DeepSeek name.
- Goals involve the sale of counterfeit tokens and deceptive AI apps.
- Misleading advertisements in Meta Ads are leading users to online scams.
DeepSeek-related incidents
Branddi reported that in January, 2,137 fraudulent websites were created under the DeepSeek brand, with 1,983 appearing within a span of five days. An additional 230 fraudulent sites were identified in early February, involving scams such as selling counterfeit tokens and deceptive applications misusing the AI name to trick users and investors.
Scammers use Meta Ads in addition to websites to advertise fake promotions, directing users to unauthorized apps that put their digital security at risk. The deceptive nature of these ads increases the likelihood of users being deceived.
Branddi’s research also indicates a notable rise in searches concerning DeepSeek-related scams. In Brazil, the term DeepSeek saw a 100-fold increase on January 28, showing that the issue is becoming more prominent among both victims and individuals seeking to safeguard themselves.
What does Brand Impersonation mean?

Scammers are using Brand Impersonation to copy a well-established brand’s visual identity and name, creating fake domains, marketplaces, and ads to perpetrate large-scale scams. This not only impacts consumers negatively but also damages companies’ reputations and finances.
Gustavo Mariotto, CSO of Branddi, believes that DeepSeek should not be held responsible for the scams, as its identity is being manipulated by scammers. According to Mariotto, the AI is also a victim alongside the deceived users.
How can one prevent succumbing to these attacks?
Branddi cautions that fraud of this nature has a tendency to increase, given the high level of interest in new AI tools. To safeguard yourself, exercise caution. To steer clear of such scams, adhere to some fundamental guidelines.
- Always verify the URL before visiting any website.
- Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true.
- Avoid downloading applications from unfamiliar sources.
- Avoid clicking on questionable advertisement links.
- Utilize security tools to verify domains and URLs.
Keep an eye on the internet activity of elderly, children, and other non-experts in your family or social circle, as online risks are widespread.
