Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office concluded that Brazil is not a “lawless land” after fact-checking the situation in Meta.

Jorge Messiah, the Chief Minister of the Union’s Attorney General, stated that Brazil will not tolerate the changes announced by Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, that could increase the spread of disinformation on the platform.

There is no country where there is no law. Our legal system provides measures to address misinformation. Additionally, we will not tolerate any wrongdoing.

Meta’s ruling, overseeing Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, will initially impact solely the United States. Nevertheless, Mark Zuckerberg’s statement has raised alarm among other nations, particularly in Latin America, due to the entrepreneur’s warnings about sovereignty.

The AGU Minister highlighted the importance of reaching a verdict in the Supreme Court trial regarding social media responsibility, as emphasized by the decision of the American company.

Minister Dias Toffoli is overseeing the trial, where he has supported the requirement for platforms to remove illegal posts, even without a court order. Nevertheless, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso has requested a review of the case, which will be continued following the judiciary recess.
