The EU is increasing its research efforts on social network X.

The European Commission, the administrative branch of the European Union, stated on Friday (17) that it is prolonging its inquiry into the social media platform X, due to suspicions of algorithm manipulation for political reasons.

Today, we are implementing fresh measures to ensure that X’s recommendation systems adhere to the requirements outlined in the Digital Services Act (DSA), stated Henna Virkkunen, the European Commissioner for Technological Sovereignty.

The EU initiated an inquiry into X in December 2023, examining the internal processes of Elon Musk’s exclusive platform aimed at limiting the dissemination of false information or unlawful material.

The Commission asked X to share internal documents about content recommendation algorithm design and operation, as well as information on account moderation and promotion.

The Commission stated that these actions will enable its services to consider all pertinent information when evaluating systemic risks under the DSA.

Musk views the Digital Services Act as a method for the EU to regulate content.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that all platforms within the EU adhere to our regulations, which are designed to create a just, secure, and democratic online space,” stated the European Commissioner.

Thomas Regnier, a representative of the Commission’s digital affairs, refuted claims that the EU had halted its inquiries into digital platforms to prevent conflicts with the United States.

The spokesman stated that the announcement on Friday is not influenced by any political factors.
