The Supreme Court unanimously passed a law on Friday that could ban the TikTok platform in the United States, where it has 170 million users, starting from Sunday.
The highest court of the country made a significant decision against TikTok, stating that the law does not protect freedom of speech and acknowledging the American government’s valid worries regarding the platform’s Chinese ownership.
White House officials confirmed on Friday that law enforcement will be under the control of President-elect Donald Trump when he assumes office next Monday, following any potential vetoes.
The government acknowledges that due to the timing of the calendar, the enforcement of the law should be postponed to the next administration, according to Karine Jean-Pierre, Joe Biden’s press secretary.
Trump said he discussed the TikTok matter with Chinese President Xi Jinping on a call and indicated he would need to assess the situation before making a decision.
Trump stated on his platform, Truth Social, that he will decide on TikTok soon but requires time to assess the situation.
The Justice Department, which would enforce the law, indicated support for delaying its implementation by stating that its application would evolve gradually.
“Valid worries” –
The Supreme Court listened to ByteDance’s arguments last week, where the company contended that the implementation of the rule should be halted as it infringes on freedom of speech.
The American Congress passed a law last year with a large majority, which mandates that the Chinese company must either sell Tiktok or cease its operations in the United States by January 19.
For over 170 million Americans, TikTok serves as a vital platform for self-expression, engagement, and community building, according to the judges’ ruling on Friday.
Congress has decided that suspension is needed to deal with its valid worries about national security concerning TikTok’s data collection practices and its connection with a foreign adversary.
The ban’s entry into force date on Sunday is upheld despite calls for a postponement from legislators and officials across the political spectrum.
The legislation was created in response to the prevailing belief in Washington that Tiktok is being utilized by China for spying or propaganda.

Mike Waltz, Trump’s pick for National Security Adviser, stated to Fox News that the upcoming administration will implement actions to avoid TikTok being deleted.
The law permits an elongation provided there is a workable deal in place, which grants President Trump the opportunity to allow TikTok to continue operating.
He saw it as a valuable opportunity for his campaign to promote his message of ‘America first,’ while also aiming to safeguard user data.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer requested that the upcoming ban on TikTok be delayed.
“It is evident that it requires additional time to locate an American purchaser without disrupting the lives and livelihoods of numerous Americans, including numerous influencers who have established a strong following network,” he stated.
Internet providers and Apple and Google app stores will need to block TikTok downloads if this law is enacted.
The network’s attorney, Noel Francisco, stated that the platform will be shut down on Sunday if the ban is not stopped by the court. Reports from the media indicated that the company is considering a complete halt of service in the United States.
During the election campaign, Trump vowed to protect TikTok, and his team has been exploring methods to prevent the ban or save the application.
When Trump assumes the presidency, the law enforcement responsibilities will rest with his Attorney General, who has the option to decide whether to carry out or postpone the initiative, despite facing resistance from a majority of Congress.
